Supreme Court Halts Missouri’s GOP Redistricting Map for Second Time

The Supreme Court has again blocked Missouri’s new congressional voting map. The map was drawn by Republicans to gain an advantage in midterm elections. A federal appeals court had earlier sided with those Republicans.

The high court’s order keeps the previous district lines in place for now. This marks the second time the justices have intervened in this case. The dispute centers on whether the new map is legal.

Missouri’s Republican-led legislature approved the redrawn boundaries last year. Democrats challenged the map in federal court, arguing it dilutes minority votes. The appeals court ruled in favor of Republicans.

The Supreme Court’s decision does not settle the case. It only pauses the use of the new map while litigation continues. Both sides will return to lower courts for further arguments.

The blocked map would have likely given Republicans an extra seat in Congress. Missouri currently has eight congressional districts. The redrawn version would have split several counties differently.

Voting rights groups praised the court’s action. They say the original map is fairer and more representative. Republican officials declined to comment on the order.

The case could affect other states with similar redistricting battles. Courts across the country are weighing challenges to partisan maps. This Missouri dispute is one of several heading toward final rulings.

Election officials in Missouri must now prepare for upcoming contests using the old boundaries. The primary and general election schedules remain unchanged. Further legal steps are expected in the coming weeks.
