Trump Seeks $810 Million Cut to Education and Health Funds, Challenging Congress

President Trump has proposed canceling $810 million in education and health funding already approved by Congress. The request targets programs that lawmakers authorized for the current fiscal year. It marks a direct challenge to congressional spending authority.

The proposal uses a rescissions package, a tool that lets the White House ask Congress to withdraw previously approved funds. Congress must vote on the request within a set period. If lawmakers take no action, the money is released.

This is the second time in two years the White House has tried to claw back approved funding. The earlier attempt also targeted education and health programs. That effort met resistance from both parties.

The affected funds cover a range of services, including public health grants and school programs. Specific details on which programs face cuts remain limited. The administration argues the spending is unnecessary.

Critics say the move bypasses the normal budget process. They note that Congress already approved the funds through regular legislation. Some lawmakers warn the proposal could disrupt ongoing services.

Supporters contend the president has the right to propose spending reductions. They say the rescissions process exists for exactly this purpose. The debate centers on how much power the executive branch holds over federal spending.

Congress now faces a choice: approve the cuts, reject them, or let the deadline pass. The outcome will shape future battles over budget authority. It may also set a precedent for how rescissions are used.
