Eating More Carbs May Slow Biological Aging, New Study Finds

A new study suggests that eating more carbohydrates may slow the body’s biological aging process. Researchers found a link between higher carb intake and a younger biological age. The findings add to the ongoing debate over optimal macronutrient ratios.

Biological age measures how well the body functions at the cellular level. It can differ from chronological age, which is simply the number of years a person has lived. Factors like diet, stress, and sleep influence this measure.

The study examined data from thousands of adults over several years. Participants reported their typical eating habits through detailed questionnaires. Researchers then compared carb consumption with markers of cellular aging.

Those who ate more carbohydrates tended to have longer telomeres. Telomeres are protective caps on DNA that shorten as cells age. Longer telomeres generally indicate slower biological aging and better cell health.

The type of carbohydrate mattered significantly in the analysis. Complex carbs from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables showed the strongest association. Refined sugars and processed starches did not offer the same benefit.

Experts caution that the study shows correlation, not causation. People who eat more carbs may also have other healthy lifestyle habits. Controlled trials are needed to confirm whether carbs directly affect aging.

The results challenge popular low-carb diets for longevity. Very restrictive carb intake may not be optimal for everyone. A balanced approach with quality carbs appears more promising for healthy aging.

Further research will explore how different carb sources affect aging. Scientists also want to understand the role of fiber and gut health. For now, the study supports including whole-food carbohydrates in a balanced diet.
