Pentagon Polygraphs 50 Joint Staff in Major Classified Leak Crackdown

The Pentagon has administered polygraph tests to approximately 50 Joint Staff members as part of an extensive investigation into recent leaks of classified information. The unprecedented move follows news reports detailing internal discussions about the war with Iran and concerns over the U.S. military’s depleted munitions stockpiles.

The testing marks one of the most aggressive leak hunts in recent Pentagon history. Officials familiar with the operation said the polygraphs were conducted over several days and targeted personnel with access to sensitive planning documents. Joint Staff members are typically top military officers and advisors who handle high-level strategic matters.

The investigation is centered on disclosures that revealed operational assessments of the conflict with Iran. Those reports also spotlighted shortages in critical ammunition reserves, raising questions about the military’s readiness in a prolonged engagement. The information, while not marked as top secret, was considered sensitive enough to warrant heightened scrutiny.

Pentagon officials have not named any suspects publicly. A defense spokesperson said the polygraph sessions are part of a broader, ongoing review but declined to provide specifics on the scope or duration of the inquiry. The spokesperson emphasized that the process is standard practice for handling unauthorized disclosures.

Polygraph tests are not routinely used for all staff, making the scale of this operation particularly notable. Legal experts note that such tests cannot be used as sole evidence in courts-martial but are often employed to narrow the field of investigators. Their use in this context signals a high level of concern within military leadership.

The leak investigation comes at a delicate time for U.S. defense posture. Reports on depleted munitions have fueled debate in Congress over defense budgets and supply chain resilience. Some lawmakers have called for public briefings, while others have urged restraint on sharing operational details that could benefit adversaries.

Personnel who underwent the testing have been advised not to discuss the process with colleagues. The secrecy surrounding the effort has added tension among Joint Staff members, who typically operate under strict information-sharing protocols. Morale impacts remain unclear, but past leak probes have often created a climate of caution.

This is not the first leak inquiry under the current administration, but it is the largest targeting Joint Staff directly. Previous investigations focused on specific intelligence agencies or combatant commands. The new approach suggests a need to address systemic vulnerabilities at the highest planning levels.

The outcome of the polygraph tests could lead to further interviews or administrative actions. If no clear source is identified, the Pentagon may expand the investigation to additional staff or employ other forensic tools, such as digital audit trails. Officials have not provided a timeline for concluding the inquiry.

For now, the focus remains on preserving operational security while maintaining trust within the military chain of command. The balance between transparency and secrecy is especially fraught during active conflicts, where leaked information can directly impact troop safety and strategic advantage.
