S&P 500 Notches Third Straight Weekly Gain as Fed Rate-Hike Bets Fade

The S&P 500 closed out its third straight week of gains, propelled by renewed investor expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged at its September meeting. The benchmark index steadily climbed throughout the week, recovering ground lost earlier in the summer.

Traders shifted their focus to the central bank’s upcoming policy decision after a series of economic data releases pointed to moderating inflation. The latest consumer price index report showed price pressures cooling at a faster pace than analysts had projected. That data reinforced the view that the Fed’s tightening cycle may be nearing its end.

Federal funds futures now price in a high probability of a rate hold next month, according to CME Group data. Just a few weeks ago, markets had been split over the possibility of another quarter-point increase. The shift in sentiment has offered support across multiple sectors, particularly in technology and consumer discretionary stocks.

A resilient labor market also played a role in buoying sentiment. Weekly jobless claims came in lower than expected, suggesting that the economy remains on solid footing despite restrictive monetary policy. Investors interpreted the combination of easing inflation and steady employment as a favorable backdrop for corporate earnings.

Several large-cap companies delivered stronger-than-expected quarterly reports during the week, adding further momentum to the rally. Earnings beats were concentrated in the financial and industrial sectors, where management teams cited stable demand and improving margins. Analysts noted that profit forecasts for the coming quarters have begun to stabilize after months of downward revisions.

Bond yields moved lower over the session, with the 10-year Treasury yield falling to its lowest level in several weeks. Lower yields reduce borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, a dynamic that historically supports equity valuations. The dollar also eased against a basket of major currencies, providing an additional tailwind for multinational firms.

The market’s advance has been broad-based, with more than 70% of S&P 500 constituents trading in positive territory for the week. That marks a contrast from earlier in the year, when gains were driven largely by a handful of mega-cap technology names. Small-cap indexes also outperformed, signaling that investor risk appetite is expanding beyond the largest companies.

Looking ahead, market participants will parse a fresh batch of economic data, including durable goods orders and consumer confidence figures. The Fed’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole is also on the calendar, where policymakers may offer clues about the path for rates. For now, the prevailing view on Wall Street is that a soft landing remains achievable, though risks tied to global growth persist.

The closing level for the index was its highest since early August, leaving the benchmark within striking distance of its record high. Volume was slightly above the recent average, reflecting active participation from institutional investors. The weekly gain adds to a broader recovery that has erased a significant portion of the summer pullback.
