The $70,000 Secret: Why Your 401(k) Max Is Actually $50,000 Higher Than You Think

The annual cap on 401(k) contributions for 2025 is often cited as $23,500 for workers under 50. However, the actual legal ceiling for total contributions into a single plan is far higher. That figure sits at $70,000, which is nearly $50,000 above the standard employee deferral limit.

The difference comes down to how the Internal Revenue Service categorizes contributions. The $23,500 limit applies only to the money an employee elects to defer from their paycheck. Funds deposited by an employer, such as matching contributions or profit-sharing payments, count toward a separate, larger cap.

That larger cap, officially set at $70,000 for 2025, includes the employee’s pre-tax and Roth contributions combined with the employer’s share. For workers aged 50 and older, the total can climb even higher with catch-up contributions. This expanded limit allows for a much more aggressive savings strategy.

Most investors miss this opportunity because the summary plan description, the document outlining these rules, is rarely read. This document contains key details about vesting schedules and employer contribution formulas. Reviewing it can reveal whether an individual is leaving untapped retirement wealth on the table.

The frequency of employer contributions is a primary factor that determines what portion of the $70,000 limit is accessible. Some companies fund accounts annually, while others deposit a set percentage with every paycheck. A worker’s individual salary also caps how much an employer can contribute since these amounts are often defined as a fraction of compensation.

Understanding the mechanics of matching is also crucial. An employer match that covers 50% of worker contributions up to a specific percentage can add thousands of dollars annually. Maximizing that full match remains the most straightforward way for an average employee to approach the higher total. Not taking full advantage of it is equivalent to declining a guaranteed return.

Consulting the plan summary is the first step to closing this savings gap. Employees can then calculate their current year-to-date contributions and compare them with the projected employer deposit. This process ensures the account is on track to hit the full $70,000 limit, not just the standard deferral cap.

For those who cannot reach the higher limit through salary alone, other options exist. Some plans permit after-tax contributions that are not Roth deferrals, which can be converted to a Roth IRA, a maneuver often called the mega backdoor Roth. The feasibility of this strategy depends entirely on the specific language within the employer’s plan document.

The gap between the standard limit and the absolute maximum widens the opportunity for wealth accumulation. A worker who focuses solely on the $23,500 figure will likely miss out on thousands in potential savings. A direct review of one’s plan materials is the most actionable way to secure those funds.
