The Hidden Cost of Leaving Medicare Advantage After an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis: What Patients Must Know Before Switching

Medicare Advantage patients facing serious diagnoses like Alzheimer’s disease are increasingly leaving their plans, a shift that may carry significant financial consequences. The annual Medicare open-enrollment period, running from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, offers a limited window for beneficiaries to make these changes.

Data shows a notable trend of disenrollment among individuals who develop complex health conditions. These patients often switch to traditional Medicare, seeking broader access to specialists and fewer prior-authorization hurdles. However, the move is not always a straightforward fix.

Leaving a Medicare Advantage plan can trigger higher out-of-pocket costs for those with chronic or progressive illnesses. Unlike many Advantage plans, original Medicare lacks an annual out-of-pocket maximum for services covered under Part B, leaving patients exposed to potentially unlimited expenses.

Prescription drug coverage also presents a critical gap. Beneficiaries leaving Advantage plans must secure a separate Part D plan, and failing to do so promptly results in late enrollment penalties. These penalties accrue for as long as the individual remains without creditable coverage.

The financial stakes are particularly high for Alzheimer’s patients, who require long-term care services often excluded from both Medicare Advantage and original Medicare. Advantage plans may offer some supplemental benefits, like adult day care, that disappear upon disenrollment.

Experts advise careful planning before switching, emphasizing the need to compare total yearly costs, not just monthly premiums. This includes estimating copays, coinsurance, and the cost of specific medications under each potential plan.

During the open-enrollment window, beneficiaries can reassess their coverage with updated health information. Yet, for those diagnosed with serious diseases mid-year, special enrollment periods may allow for earlier changes, though these options vary by circumstance.

Navigating this decision requires a thorough review of medical needs and financial resources. Consumers should contact state health insurance assistance programs for free, unbiased guidance before making a final choice.
