Axion Signal Detected: The Most Compelling Evidence Yet for Dark Matter

An underground detector has recorded a strange interaction that points to a particle with properties consistent with dark matter. The signal is weak, but researchers describe it as the most compelling evidence yet for a dark matter particle.

The detection occurred deep beneath the Earth’s surface, where experiments are shielded from cosmic rays and other background noise. Instruments there are designed to catch the rare collisions between normal matter and hypothetical dark matter particles.

Scientists observed an event that matches the expected signature of an axion, a particle first proposed decades ago. Axions are light, elusive particles that could explain the missing mass in the universe, known as dark matter.

The event was recorded by a detector that uses a strong magnetic field to convert dark matter into detectable photons. This approach relies on the theory that axions can interact with electromagnetic fields under specific conditions.
