The “Fast & Furious” franchise has expanded into the world of theme park attractions with a new roller coaster at Universal Studios Hollywood. The ride, called “Fast & Furious: Supercharged,” opened to the public this week. It replaces the former “Fast & Furious” tram tour segment.
Vin Diesel, the star of the film series, was scheduled to appear at the grand opening event. He did not attend. Representatives for the actor did not provide a reason for his absence. Fans in attendance still filled the queue area with enthusiasm.
The coaster uses a launching mechanism that propels riders from zero to 40 miles per hour in under two seconds. The track spans more than 4,000 feet of steel. It features a top speed of 60 miles per hour and includes two inversions.
Ride vehicles are designed to look like customized muscle cars from the films. Each car seats 20 passengers. Onboard speakers play a soundtrack of engine roars and selections from the movie scores. A digital display on the back of each seat shows a live feed of the track ahead.
The story line places riders in the middle of a high-stakes chase through Los Angeles. Projection screens and practical effects appear throughout the course. A tunnel sequence surrounds the train with a 360-degree animated scene. Heat lamps and misters simulate the feeling of a street race.
Queue areas display props and vehicles from the films, including a replica of Dominic Toretto’s black Dodge Charger. Interactive screens let visitors design their own crew. The exit path leads into a gift shop stocked with themed merchandise.
