Representative Tom Tiffany, the Republican nominee for governor in Wisconsin, sustained minor injuries after a plane he was traveling in made an emergency landing on Lake Wausau on Saturday.
The aircraft went down in the water near Wausau, a city in central Wisconsin, according to initial reports. Tiffany and the pilot were the only people on board at the time of the incident.
Both men escaped the plane and swam to safety, Tiffany said in a brief statement. He described his injuries as minor and did not require hospitalization.
The pilot has not been publicly identified. Authorities have not released details about what caused the emergency landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to investigate the crash. A preliminary report typically takes several weeks to complete.
Tiffany is currently serving as the U.S. representative for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. He secured the Republican nomination for governor earlier this year.
The incident occurred as Tiffany campaigns for the state’s top office. He is set to face Democratic candidate in the November general election.
Lake Wausau is a popular recreational area located along the Wisconsin River. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after the plane went down.
