Why September’s Curse Might Not Strike the S&P 500 This Year

The S&P 500 historically posts its weakest monthly performance in September, but current market signals suggest a different outcome this year. A key trading level indicates the index might avoid the steep declines that have defined this period in past decades.

September has earned a reputation as the worst month for U.S. equities, with the benchmark index averaging a loss over the past century. Seasonal patterns often trigger investor caution, leading to reduced positions and increased volatility.

However, technical analysts point to a specific support level that has held firm in recent weeks. This level, if maintained, could prevent the type of selloff that many traders anticipate when the calendar flips to autumn.

The resilience of this support contrasts with historical trends that show September as a period of consistent downward pressure. Market participants have been watching this threshold closely, as a break below it would likely confirm the traditional seasonal weakness.

Fundamentals also play a supporting role this year. Corporate earnings have remained stronger than expected, and economic data continues to show modest growth, providing a cushion against typical September jitters.

Interest rate expectations are another factor. The Federal Reserve has signaled a patient approach, which reduces uncertainty that often amplifies seasonal declines.

Institutional positioning differs from prior years as well. Many funds have reduced their exposure ahead of the expected weakness, which may limit the selling pressure that usually accelerates in September.

Still, risks remain. Geopolitical tensions and inflation data could disrupt the current stability. A surprise in either direction would test the resilience of the key support level.

For now, the balance of evidence suggests that September may not deliver its usual blow. Traders should watch the defined floor as the month progresses, since it remains the clearest indicator of whether this year breaks from tradition.
