Couples with a big age gap need more money — they have to plan for two retirements

Couples with a significant age gap face unique financial challenges. A difference of more than 10 years often means two distinct retirement timelines. This requires more savings and careful planning than same-age couples typically need.

The older partner may retire first while the younger one continues working. That creates a gap between when one income stops and the other remains active. Health insurance and daily expenses must be covered during this transition period.

Social Security benefits add another layer of complexity. Claiming strategies differ when spouses reach eligibility at different times. The higher earner may delay benefits to maximize survivor payments for the younger partner.

Healthcare costs tend to rise with age. The older spouse will likely need more medical care sooner than the younger one. Long-term care planning becomes more urgent when one partner may need assistance years earlier.

Pension and retirement account withdrawals must stretch across two different lifespans. A younger spouse could live 20 or 30 years after the older partner passes away. The remaining funds must support the survivor for decades.

Life insurance can help bridge the gap if the older spouse dies first. It replaces lost income and covers expenses the younger partner still faces. Term policies often provide affordable coverage during the working years.

Estate planning ensures assets transfer smoothly between partners with different life expectancies. Wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations should reflect the age difference. Without proper planning, the younger spouse may face financial hardship later.

Working with a financial advisor who understands age-gap dynamics is essential. They can model different scenarios and recommend tailored solutions. Early planning gives both partners more options and greater security.
