Trump Administration Expands Public Charge Rule to Limit Green Cards for Benefit Users

The Trump administration has announced new restrictions on green card eligibility for immigrants who use public assistance programs. The policy marks a significant shift in U.S. immigration law.

The change targets immigrants who rely on benefits such as food stamps, housing aid, or Medicaid. Officials say the rule aims to enforce self-sufficiency among visa holders and applicants.

Federal data suggest the restrictions could affect hundreds of thousands of people. Many immigrants may now avoid using assistance programs to protect their immigration status.

The new policy expands the definition of a “public charge,” a long-standing term used to deny entry to those likely to depend on government support. It now considers broader use of non-cash benefits.

Immigration advocates argue the rule will harm public health and children’s welfare. Some low-income families might forgo essential services out of fear.

Legal challenges are expected from states and advocacy groups. The rule’s implementation may face court delays or injunctions.

Supporters of the policy claim it will reduce taxpayer burdens and prioritize skilled immigrants. The administration defends the measure as part of broader immigration enforcement.

The final rule is set to take effect in October. Immigrants currently in the United States must weigh their use of public benefits carefully.
