Judge Unseals Filings From Jack Smith Subpoena Targeting U.S. Lawmaker’s Phone Records

A federal judge in Washington has unsealed filings connected to a subpoena issued by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The subpoena sought phone data from a current United States lawmaker.

The Justice Department had objected to the disclosure. Officials argued the government had not officially acknowledged the special counsel’s subpoenas. They also cited rules protecting grand jury secrecy.

The judge concluded that the public interest in the matter outweighed those concerns. The ruling allows limited access to the court records. The exact nature of the subpoena remains partially redacted.

The lawmaker involved has not been publicly identified. The case stems from Smith’s broader investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The subpoena sought call logs and metadata, not content of conversations.

Legal experts say the ruling is significant. It provides a rare window into the special counsel’s investigative methods. Sealed grand jury materials are typically kept confidential indefinitely.

The unsealed filings may reveal which lawmaker is under scrutiny. They could also show the scope of information Smith’s team sought. The records are expected to be made available on the court docket soon.

The Justice Department has not commented on the judge’s decision. A spokesperson declined to discuss ongoing litigation. The case continues under seal in other respects.
